WiMax in Milton Keynes - not at that price

Sun, 20 Apr 2008 15:58:08 PDT
Last year, I wrote a post about free Wi-Fi provision in central Milton Keynes. I wasn’t very impressed (although I’d like to see the service prosper) but have to admit that I haven’t tried it since. In the same post, I also mentioned that there was a WiMax trial planned for Milton Keynes and a few weeks back, after hearing nothing for over a year, I received an e-mail to tell me that it is now available in my area. This sounded good - I have “up to 8Mbps” ADSL at home and my router tells me th

WE GET A good group of commenters here in Sticksville. Lately, we've been hearing quite a bit from a young woman from the Prairies, who has an openminded attitude toward Canadian shows, and an engaged and passionate way of defending them. On the subject of all the changes going on at the CBC, I think she's expressed the necessary corrective point of view better than Richard Stursberg, Kirstine Leyfield, or anybody else at the public broadcaster has managed to do. So I'm bumping her comment here

Military analysts and the public

Sun, 20 Apr 2008 15:56:26 PDT
I'm Sam Levenback. I'm a blogger and a student in Washington, DC. Jonathan has been kind enough to let me help out on the weekends. This morning's New York Times features a disturbing article that untangles the role of military analysts appearing on network and cable television. These analysts are presented as neutral experts, but most are, in fact, taking their talking points directly from the Department of Defense. Additionally, plenty of these pundits also serve as lobbyists and consultants

When I Say Madam ...

Sun, 20 Apr 2008 15:50:36 PDT
You say President! Madam! President! Madam! President! These were the words that got to me among a small crowd of thousands at the intersection a half block from our favorite farmer's market. I've taken longer than I thought to write about this because I'm still absorbing it, still mulling over it and what I heard hours later, long after Hillary Clinton departed for her next Pennsylvania destination. She was compassionate. And stunning. And full of life and passion. When she entered the

Oil up! Freak out! Dow up? Shut up!

Fri, 18 Apr 2008 12:50:34 PDT
Oil up! Freak out! Dow up? Shut up! The state-run media in Canada (and the citizen-owned media who do their best to compete with them) all lament, daily (with intra-day lament updates, all day long), the price of a barrel of oil, and the resulting price of gas. (Of course they don’t have the foggiest clue what they’re talking about, but they pretend they do.) Even as I was writing this, the state-owned CBC did a story about the latest rise in gas prices. Apparently it’s getting h
